LEEDS: Formal Education Volunteer

Based at the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds

The Royal Armouries formal education team offers an outstanding educational enviroment to schools and colleges from all over the country. Immersive, interactive and fast paced workshops ensure that pupils will be talking about ‘WOW’ moments back in the classroom for months.

We are looking for enthusiastic and creatively minded volunteers in order to assist with the smooth running of our extremely busy days! You must be able to work with pupils of all ages, have a zeal for making learning exciting and be up for a challenge!

 

What's involved?

Please note, we do interview all our volunteers for this position. Not every person will be taken forward from interview to become a volunteer.  

To work alongside the Education team, assisting in the delivery of a variety of activities including formal and informal learning.

Key Tasks

  • Work alongside the Education Officer and Learning Assistants to maintain a high standard of educational material.
  • Set up and put away museum artefacts for use in formal learning sessions.
  • To provide safe and secure working practices in all activities for staff, pupils and museum objects.
  • To assist in the promotion of all learning programmes and materials.
  • Gain a basic historical knowledge on the topics taught in the learning programme.
  • Moving, setting up and putting away teaching equipment, including heavy arms & armour, etc.
  • You may be required to wear replica historic costumes.

Policies and Procedure

  • Comply with Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Equality and other relevant legislation
  • Work to RA organizational policies and procedures, including risk management, to protect people, the collection and the museum’s reputation

People

  • Work as directed by the Education Officer or Learning Assistants.

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the education team.

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism when communicating with teachers and other visitors.

Personal Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team and support colleagues
  • Protect the reputation of the museum
  • Demonstrate the museum’s values

Disclosure

A Police Check and other security checks may be requested in the event of a successful application. However, a criminal record would not necessarily be a bar to volunteering. Any decision made would depend upon the nature of the position and the circumstances and background of your offence.
